Mistake #1: The battery replacement cost fiasco

In April 2023, a commercial client asked me: "How much is a Tesla battery replacement going to run us on this Powerpack we're considering?"

I wanted to sound helpful, so I rattled off a rough number based on a single quote I'd seen six months earlier. I said $12,000–$15,000 per unit. They heard a firm cap. We shook hands. Three months later, the actual cost landed at $18,700 per unit — plus $2,400 in shipping and a 6-week wait. I had to explain that my estimate was based on a different generation of batteries and didn't include labor or inverter reconfiguration. Some people will say: "But convenience matters! Clients want a single point of contact."

I completely agree — but within reason. The problem is that a 'full-service' promise often means you're subcontracting half the work anyway, and you become the bottleneck. The surge protector mistake? I could have handed that off to a proper electrical engineer. The battery cost guess? Should have referred to Tesla's official quote team. The wind question? Should have stayed quiet.

Being a 'one-stop-shop' works when you actually master every discipline. In renewable energy, that's nearly impossible because the tech evolves faster than any individual can track. The vendors who earn my repeat business are the ones who say: "This is exactly what we do. This other part? Here's a great partner."

So no, I don't promise 'everything under one roof' anymore. I promise one thing: we'll handle your Tesla battery storage and solar like nobody else can. And for everything else, I'll point you to someone who can. That honesty has saved me more headaches — and more money — than any checklist ever could.
